Rev. John J. Burkhard, O.F.M. Conv., Dr. Eś Sc. Rel., was honored at graduation as a Washington Theological Union Professor Emeritus. Fr. Burkhard began his service at the Union in 1991 as an Assistant Professor in Systematic Theology, becoming Associate Professor in 1996, and Full Professor in 2007. During his tenure at WTU, Fr. Burkhard has filled many roles, including interim Academic Dean and President. The Washington Theological Union is indebted to Fr. Burkhard for his distinguished service.
Joseph Mazzawi, President of the Student Senate presented the Rev. Vincent Cushing Award for Service to Julianne Wallace, MTS '10 during the graduation ceremony. The Cushing award is given to the graduate who has contributed most significantly to the life of the Union. The award is named in honor of Rev. Vincent Cushing OFM, STD who served with distinction as President of WTU for 24 years. In his comments, Joseph celebrated Julianne's welcoming demeanor as well as her musical and liturgical skills. Julianne's name will appear on the Cushing Award plaque in Founders Hall. Congratulations Julianne!
Dr. Kathy Brown, Dean of Students, introduced Joan Goodfellow Knetemann, MA '10 as this year's Coriden Valedictor. Mentioning the award could be the result of the amount of chocolate Joan brought to her classes, she continued with three important points to share from the class of 2010.
