Course Numbering
- 400-499 identifies courses taught in philosophy that are offered to fulfill certain degree admission requirements. These courses cannot be used to satisfy course requirements for graduate degrees or certificates.
- 500-599 identifies introductory graduate courses that are required for individual programs.
- 600-699 identifies other graduate courses that are specifically required for individual programs.
- 700-799 identifies all other graduate courses that are elective possibilities to complete program requirements.
- 800-999 identifies graduate courses that are required for doctoral programs.
- The parenthetical number after the course title indicates the number of credits assigned to the course.
- Some courses have pre-requisites and/or restrictions established either by a department or by the individual instructor. These are cited in the affected course description and may be waived with the instructor’s written permission.
- Selected courses are designated as having cross-departmental application and identified with the applicable area prefix
Study Options
Occasionally, students may complete coursework using the Reading Course or Independent Study option instead of the normal class attendance method; these are primarily for elective courses. Detailed procedures for these two options are provided on the Forms and Instructions page. Option is not available to Doctoral students.
