Reflections for September 14th - September 19th

This school year we continue with reflections on our daily readings from the School Sisters of Notre Dame website.

Tuesday, September 14, 2010
Numbers 21: 4-9; OR Philippians 2: 6-11; Psalm 78; John 3: 13-17
We are loved sinners. Who among us can say she or he has emptied her/himself in total service?  This is the mind of Christ: not to cling to power or prestige but to empty himself.  We don’t do “as Jesus did” but we are putting on the mind of Christ now, today. Do you want that?  Ask the Spirit to show you what in you needs emptying, just for today. To read these daily reflections, please click here.

Homily Helper
Twenty Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time, September 19th
Luke 16:1-13
Luke does not condemn wealth as such. What he does condemn is a preoccupation or obsession with riches that precludes one's need to place the awareness of others and of their needs at the top of one's list of responsibilities. When the gospel says that we must choose between God and mammon, it is asking us to declare where we finally put our trust. Wealth and talents can serve God's purposes, but they must never replace God as the center of our attention in life. To read the rest of Campion P. Gavaler, OSB's reflection on this reading, please click here .

F.R.A.N.C.I.S. Commitment to Civility in Discourse

take action buttonThe Franciscan Action Network has launched an effort to encourage persons of faith and others who support the common good to take a public commitment to promoting civil discourse in our nation during the upcoming election season.

This commitment - called the F.R.A.N.C.I.S. Commitment to Civility in Discourse - is a short personal and public statement that uses the letters in the first name of St. Francis of Assisi to promote values that are consistent with maintaining a Christian and respectful state of mind when addressing others in political discourse.  FAN believes that Franciscan values can contribute to a more wholistic public discourse when people focus on the bedrock principles of respect for the other, humility, and a desire for dialogue, even when particular stances on issues may differ. FAN encourages you to take the commimtent through their website (http://www.franciscanaction.org/franciscommitment and to send a message to your candidates for elected federal office inviting them to do the same using our online action alert system, and then to use resources to spread the word about the effort.
