Union Life

Student Life - A Vibrant and Creative Community

Spiritual Life

Picture Placeholder with class: leftThe faith of the believing community is nourished through a variety of regular and special liturgies and prayer forms throughout the year. Whether in the Connelly Chapel of the Holy Wisdom (with its award-winning design) or other worship locations, the community gathers for liturgy of the Eucharist or Hours, for special days of reflection, and for multicultural or interfaith worship experiences that celebrate the ongoing presence of God.

Social Life Picture Placeholder with class: right

From the opening day cookout to the graduation reception, students have ample opportunity to gather and socialize among themselves as well as with faculty and staff. Friendships are established informally over lunch in the school dining room or one of the neighborhood cafes, at an after class pizza party at one of the religious houses, at a brunch social after decorating the school Christmas tree, or just over coffee in the Student Lounge.

Cultural Life

Visually, religious art is experienced in the Union's permanent collection, in the frequent professional exhibitions and in the on-site art studio that stimulates student creativity. Beyond that, sound enhances the visual through singing in the Choir, ministering musically in the liturgies, performing at other community social events or recitals. The culminating artistic event is the annual Festival of the Arts bringing together the creative talents of faculty, students, and staff in a potpouri of sight and sound.

Beyond the classroom, students are afforded multiple opportunities for expanding their theological horizons through scheduled faculty dialogues and informal colloquia on topical issues, or the more formal setting of liturgies and public guest lectures that feature prominent national theologians, homilists, and church leaders, both lay and ordained. In addition, students can expand their ecumenical understanding by frequenting the many and diverse events hosted by distinguished ministerial schools of other religious denominations that form the Washington Theological Consortium.
